Eye-tracking technology helps researchers see IV pump safety through student nurses' eyes

Eye-tracking technology helps researchers see IV pump safety through student nurses' eyes

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst are putting eye-tracking headsets on student nurses to get a fresh look at the safety of intravenous smart pumps. Instead of relying on self-reported feedback or post-incident interviews, the study captures exactly where a nurse looks and for how long while programming a pump. The goal is to spot design flaws that might lead to medication errors.

The technology records gaze patterns, dwell time, and the sequence of visual attention as the student works through the pump's menu. Early findings suggest that certain screen layouts cause confusion, especially when the user has to toggle between multiple windows to confirm dosage rates. One researcher noted that experienced nurses often develop workarounds for these issues, but novices get stuck or make mistakes.

By mapping the visual path, the team can identify which buttons or prompts are missed entirely. This data gives manufacturers concrete evidence for redesigning interfaces. The study also highlights the gap between how pumps are tested in labs and how they are actually used in a busy clinical setting. The researchers hope that this method will become a standard part of medical device testing, reducing the reliance on guesswork and improving patient safety before a product ever reaches a hospital floor.
