How CVS Is Building on Its Consumer-Health Care Technology Push

CVS Health is moving forward with its large-scale technology overhaul, building on a multi-billion dollar investment designed to make health care simpler for everyday customers. The company says its latest efforts center on artificial intelligence, a new store concept called Health100, and behind-the-scenes automation that aims to reduce friction in everything from prescriptions to in-store visits.

The push is part of a broader strategy to turn CVS from a traditional pharmacy chain into a more integrated health care platform. Executives say the goal is not just to offer more services, but to make them easier to access and more personalized. One of the key pieces is the use of AI to help pharmacists spot potential drug interactions faster and to give customers more accurate wait times for prescriptions. The company is also testing automated systems that handle routine tasks like inventory management and scheduling, freeing up staff to spend more time with patients.

The Health100 format, which has been rolling out in select locations, is designed around a more open layout with dedicated spaces for chronic care management, wellness products, and even some diagnostic services. CVS says early results show higher customer satisfaction and increased engagement with its app, which now lets users manage refills, book appointments, and chat with a pharmacist remotely.

While the company has not released specific return-on-investment figures for the tech push, leadership remains confident that the long-term payoff will come through improved loyalty and lower operational costs. Analysts note that CVS faces stiff competition from Amazon Pharmacy and Walmart, but its physical footprint combined with digital tools could give it an edge. The company plans to expand the AI and automation tools to more locations over the next year, with a focus on markets where customer demand is highest.
