Intel and Lens Technology collaborate on advanced AI chip packaging

Intel has announced a new collaboration with Lens Technology, a Chinese glass processing firm, to develop advanced packaging solutions for artificial intelligence chips. The partnership focuses on glass substrate technology, which is expected to replace traditional organic materials used in chip packaging. This shift aims to improve the performance and efficiency of next-generation AI processors.

Glass substrates offer several advantages over current materials. They allow for denser interconnections between the chip and the package, reducing signal loss and improving power delivery. This is critical for AI workloads that demand high bandwidth and low latency. Intel has been investing heavily in glass substrates as part of its broader strategy to maintain leadership in chip packaging, an area that has become as important as transistor design in the race for better AI hardware.

Lens Technology brings expertise in precision glass processing, including cutting, polishing, and coating. The company is known for supplying components to major electronics manufacturers. Under the agreement, the two firms will work on scaling glass substrate production to meet the volume requirements of Intel's data center and client computing divisions.

The move comes as chipmakers face increasing pressure to pack more transistors and interconnects into smaller spaces. Traditional organic substrates are reaching physical limits, leading to issues like warping and signal degradation. Glass, being more rigid and thermally stable, could overcome these hurdles. Intel expects the technology to be ready for high-volume manufacturing in the second half of the decade.

Industry analysts note that glass substrates could also reduce costs in the long run by simplifying the manufacturing process. However, challenges remain, including the need for new equipment and handling methods to prevent breakage. Intel and Lens Technology say they will address these issues through joint research and development.
