The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has levied a fine of more than $12,000 against American Peat Technology following an inspection at its Aitkin facility. According to the MPCA, the company failed to properly maintain and inspect equipment designed to control particulate matter emissions.
On June 26, 2025, agency inspectors conducted an air compliance inspection at the site. During the visit, they discovered issues with the facility's pollution control systems. The MPCA determined that American Peat Technology had not been conducting required inspections or performing necessary upkeep on the equipment meant to capture and reduce airborne particles.
Particulate matter, often referred to as dust or soot, can pose respiratory risks when released into the air. The MPCA requires industrial facilities to keep such emissions in check through regular monitoring and maintenance of control devices.
The fine covers both the penalty for the violations and the agency's costs associated with the enforcement action. The company has been ordered to correct the deficiencies and ensure future compliance with state air quality regulations. The MPCA noted that the inspection was part of routine oversight of industrial operations in the region.
