A large portion of a new federal investment in quantum computing is heading to Minnesota, with Bloomington-based SkyWater Technology set to benefit indirectly. The Trump administration announced a $2 billion initiative aimed at advancing quantum computing capabilities in the United States. Half of that total, roughly $1 billion, is earmarked for a new venture involving IBM. However, two of SkyWater's major customers are each receiving $100 million as part of the broader funding package.
SkyWater Technology, a semiconductor foundry known for its specialized chip manufacturing, does not get the money directly. Instead, the funding flows to its clients, which will likely use the cash to accelerate their own quantum computing projects. This arrangement positions SkyWater to handle the fabrication and production of advanced chips needed for those efforts. The company has been a key player in domestic chip production, particularly for defense and research applications.
The investment is part of a larger strategy to boost U.S. leadership in quantum technology, which promises breakthroughs in computing power, cryptography, and materials science. For Minnesota, the news reinforces the state's growing role in the semiconductor supply chain. While the exact timeline for the projects remains unclear, the funding signals a significant commitment to building out quantum infrastructure. SkyWater's involvement, even as a secondary beneficiary, underscores its importance in turning research into real-world hardware.
