ISTANBUL, Türkiye -- Agricultural nano-technology company ANT Systems has announced the start of industrial-scale production of NANOTERN, a biodegradable water-retention material made from cellulose. The product is designed to help crops survive drought conditions by holding moisture in the soil.
According to the company, NANOTERN is now being manufactured in large quantities and is already in use on five continents. The material breaks down naturally in the soil, which sets it apart from some synthetic water-absorbing products that can leave behind plastic residues.
The timing of the production scale-up comes as many regions face worsening dry spells and water shortages. Farmers using the technology have reported better crop survival rates during periods of low rainfall, the company said. The product works by absorbing water when it is available and slowly releasing it back into the soil as conditions dry out.
ANT Systems has not disclosed the exact production capacity of its new facilities, but the company stated that the move to industrial-scale output is meant to meet growing global demand. The firm is focusing on markets in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Australia.
The company said it plans to continue research into improving the material's efficiency and lowering costs for farmers in developing countries. No further details on pricing or distribution partners were provided.
