State lawmakers are moving toward funding a critical overhaul of the antiquated computer systems used to administer essential public assistance programs across Minnesota. In numerous counties, caseworkers still rely on software from the 1980s—a digital relic often compared to the era of the "Oregon Trail" game—to process applications for health care, food support, and other safety-net services.
This aging technology, known as the Minnesota Eligibility Technology System (METS), is notoriously slow, prone to crashes, and difficult to update. Its inefficiencies create significant hurdles for both residents in need and the county employees tasked with helping them. Caseworkers report losing valuable time to system freezes and cumbersome processes, which can delay vital benefits reaching families.
The push for modernization has gained bipartisan traction, recognizing that a new system is necessary for accuracy, security, and efficiency. Proponents argue that investing in contemporary software will ultimately improve service delivery, reduce administrative burdens on county staff, and ensure Minnesotans can access support in a timely manner. The proposed upgrade represents a long-awaited step into the 21st century for the state's social services infrastructure.
