International criminal groups use technology to expand in and beyond Asia, UN report says

Southeast Asia-based criminal organizations are leveraging advanced technology and tightly integrated networks to create a booming underground economy that now stretches far beyond the region, according to a new United Nations report. The study highlights the staggering scale of this activity, estimating that losses from online scams alone could reach between $88.3 billion and $114.1 billion in 2025.

The report details how these groups have moved beyond traditional crime to operate sophisticated fraud centers, illegal gambling platforms, and money laundering schemes. By using encrypted messaging apps, cryptocurrency, and deepfake technology, they are able to evade law enforcement and recruit victims across multiple continents. The UN notes that these criminal enterprises are no longer isolated operations but are part of a highly organized and adaptive ecosystem.

Authorities warn that the problem is accelerating faster than governments can respond. The report calls for stronger international cooperation, better regulation of digital financial systems, and more resources for cybercrime units. Without urgent action, experts say the illicit economy will continue to drain billions from legitimate markets and destabilize communities both inside and outside Asia.
