Micron Technology saw its stock price plunge 13% on Wednesday as Wall Street shifted its attention to the company's long-term artificial intelligence investment outlook. The memory chip maker, a key supplier for data centers and AI hardware, faced a selloff despite reporting quarterly results that largely met expectations.
Investors appeared to focus less on Micron's current performance and more on the pace of AI-related capital expenditures across the industry. While demand for high-bandwidth memory used in AI processors remains strong, analysts noted that the market is growing wary of the massive spending required to sustain that growth. Some traders interpreted management's forward guidance as signaling a potential slowdown in near-term AI-driven revenue acceleration.
The decline also reflected broader sector jitters. Several semiconductor stocks came under pressure as investors questioned whether the AI boom has been overpriced relative to actual earnings potential. Micron's drop pulled down other chipmakers and memory-focused companies, though the losses were less severe.
Micron executives reiterated their commitment to expanding production capacity for AI-optimized memory products. However, the market's reaction suggests that even strong execution may not be enough to satisfy investors who are now demanding clearer evidence of returns on AI investments. The stock closed at its lowest level in three weeks, erasing gains from earlier in the month.
