Letter | Doubts about nuclear fusion technology

Dear Editor: Will Briggs's article on Realta Fusion's plans to build a commercial nuclear fusion research facility at the former Oscar Mayer plant reminded me that I worked on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor at Princeton in the 1980s. We were always told that commercial fusion was about 30 years away. That timeline has not changed much in four decades. The technology remains elusive, and the promises feel familiar.

I have serious doubts about the current hype. While private companies like Realta Fusion are optimistic, the fundamental physics challenges have not been solved. Containing a plasma at millions of degrees without it cooling or destabilizing is extraordinarily difficult. The materials needed to withstand that environment do not yet exist in a practical, cost-effective form. Even if a net energy gain is achieved in a lab, scaling that to a grid-connected power plant is a separate, massive engineering problem.

the economics are questionable. Fusion reactors will be incredibly complex machines. The cost of building, maintaining, and eventually decommissioning one may never compete with solar, wind, or even advanced nuclear fission. We should not let the allure of a clean, limitless energy source distract us from deploying the technologies we already have. Fusion is a fascinating science project. But as a solution to our current climate crisis, it is a gamble we cannot afford to rely on.
