Russian intelligence services are intensifying their operations to steal Western technology and military secrets, according to officials and security analysts. The push comes as international sanctions increasingly strain Russia's wartime economy, limiting its access to advanced components and know-how needed for weapons production and surveillance systems.
The renewed focus on espionage marks a shift from earlier phases of the war, when Russia relied more heavily on stockpiles and gray-market imports. Now, with export controls tightening on microchips, precision machinery, and dual-use goods, Moscow's spy networks are working to bypass these barriers through covert channels. Targets include everything from drone guidance systems to encryption software, with operatives using front companies, cyberattacks, and diplomatic cover to acquire sensitive data.
Western counterintelligence agencies have reported a spike in suspicious activity around defense contractors and research labs. In several recent cases, Russian agents posed as academics or business partners to gain access to restricted facilities. Authorities in Europe and the United States have responded by tightening visa screening and increasing monitoring of technology transfers.
The espionage push reflects a broader struggle for Russia to sustain its military capabilities amid growing isolation. While some technology can be obtained through third countries, the most advanced systems remain out of reach. Analysts warn that the theft of intellectual property could help Russia close the gap in key areas, though the long-term impact of sanctions on its defense sector remains severe.
