Unprecedented Northeast Ohio partnership chosen for NSF Engine award, providing up to $160M to propel regional manufacturing innovation, technology and jobs | CWRU Newsroom

An unprecedented coalition of more than 70 partners, representing private industry, civic and philanthropic organizations, higher education, and state and local government, has been selected for a major National Science Foundation award. The NSF Engine award could provide up to $160 million to accelerate manufacturing innovation and create new technology jobs across Northeast Ohio.

The initiative, known as the Great Lakes Innovation and Development Enterprise, or GLIDE, aims to transform the region into a global hub for advanced manufacturing. Partners include major corporations, research universities, community colleges, workforce development groups, and economic development agencies. The coalition plans to focus on developing new materials, processes, and digital tools that can be adopted by manufacturers of all sizes.

Leaders say the funding will support applied research, help startups commercialize new technologies, and train workers for high-skilled positions. The goal is to strengthen the region's manufacturing base, which has faced challenges from global competition and shifting supply chains. Organizers expect the effort to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs over the next decade.

The NSF Engines program is designed to spur innovation in regions that have not traditionally received large amounts of federal research funding. This award marks one of the largest federal investments in Northeast Ohio's manufacturing sector in recent memory. Local officials and business leaders hailed the announcement as a game-changer for the regional economy, emphasizing that the collaboration itself is as valuable as the funding.
