When Joel and his partner got married, they set out to build a home with a healthy relationship to technology. For them, that largely meant avoiding constant smartphone use. Smartphones aren't without their benefits, but the couple wanted a way to control their smart home without pulling out a glowing screen every few minutes. Their solution was an e-paper dashboard, a low-energy display that blends into the home rather than dominating it.
The dashboard sits on a wall like a piece of art. It shows key information such as the weather, calendar events, and the status of lights or locks. Unlike a tablet or phone, the e-paper screen uses almost no power and remains readable even in bright sunlight. It updates slowly, which is intentional. The goal is not to bombard the user with notifications but to offer a calm, glanceable interface.
Joel designed the system to be customizable. Users can choose which widgets appear and how often the screen refreshes. The result is a tool that feels more like a household fixture than a piece of electronics. It challenges the idea that smart home controls must be tied to a phone. Instead, it offers a dedicated, distraction-free way to interact with the home's technology.
The project has gained attention from others looking to reduce screen time while still enjoying the convenience of a connected home. It suggests that the future of smart home design might not be more screens, but better, more thoughtful ones.
