Elon Musk has confirmed that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, distilled data from OpenAI to train its own models, a revelation that adds a new layer to the ongoing tensions between the two firms. In a recent statement, Musk admitted that xAI leveraged outputs from OpenAI's systems, a practice often referred to as "distillation," to improve the performance of its Grok chatbot and other AI tools.
Distillation involves using a larger, more capable model-like OpenAI's GPT series-to generate training data for a smaller, more efficient model. This technique is common in the industry but has become a flashpoint as companies jostle for dominance in the AI race. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before leaving the board in 2018, has been a vocal critic of the organization's shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit model. He has also accused OpenAI of prioritizing profit over safety.
The admission comes shortly after Musk accused rival Anthropic of using stolen data to train its models. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees, has denied the allegations. Musk's latest comments highlight the increasingly bitter competition among AI developers, where data sourcing and model training methods are under intense scrutiny. Critics argue that such practices blur ethical lines, while supporters say they accelerate innovation. The debate is unlikely to settle soon, as regulators and industry insiders continue to grapple with the implications of how AI models are built.
