A new strategic cooperation agreement aims to rapidly expand battery swap infrastructure, a critical step for the large-scale adoption of electric heavy-duty trucks. The partnership was formally entered into between China Battery Exchange, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kandi Technologies Group, Inc., and Qiji Energy, a subsidiary of the global battery giant CATL.
The collaboration focuses on the joint development, deployment, and operation of battery swap stations specifically designed for commercial vehicles and heavy trucks. This initiative directly addresses one of the primary barriers to electrifying freight transport: lengthy charging times that disrupt logistics operations. Battery swapping offers a solution comparable to refueling, where a depleted battery pack can be exchanged for a fully charged one in minutes, maximizing vehicle uptime.
The alliance leverages the combined strengths of both companies. China Battery Exchange brings its experience in battery swap technology and network operation, while Qiji Energy contributes deep expertise in battery development, manufacturing, and lifecycle management. By aligning their resources, the partners intend to create a more standardized and efficient ecosystem for battery-as-a-service models in the commercial transportation sector.
Industry observers note that successful implementation of this cooperation could significantly accelerate the transition of long-haul and regional trucking fleets to zero-emission vehicles. Establishing a reliable, widespread network of swap stations is seen as essential to alleviate range anxiety and improve the economic viability of electric trucks for fleet operators. This move signals a concentrated effort to tackle the infrastructural challenges at the heart of decarbonizing road freight.
