The siren call of artificial intelligence is undeniable, with promises of high salaries and cutting-edge work. However, a growing chorus of voices suggests that the rush to become an "AI expert" may be a misguided path for many. The core argument isn't that AI is unimportant, but that its true power lies in its application to existing fields.
The most significant innovations will not come from AI specialists working in a vacuum, but from domain experts who leverage AI as a powerful new tool. We desperately need biologists, historians, engineers, teachers, and artists who deeply understand their own fields first and foremost, and then learn to apply AI within that context. This fusion of deep traditional expertise with new technical capability is where transformative progress happens.
Pursuing a pure AI track risks creating a generation of technicians who understand algorithms but lack the substantive knowledge to solve real-world problems. The future belongs not to isolated AI experts, but to augmented experts in every field. The most valuable professional will be the climate scientist who uses machine learning to model complex systems or the urban planner who employs AI to optimize city logistics. The goal should be to enhance human expertise, not replace it with a singular, narrow focus.
